Victorian Decorating
on a Small Budget
Here are a few
victorian decorating tips:
Start with lace
curtains. This will add a real feminine effect to the room. If the room
doesn't need privacy, gather the lace through rods on the top and bottom and
gather the lace close together. For privacy, use a plain white roller shade
behind the curtains.
Paint your room to
bring the Victorian era alive. Make sure you don't have too many varying
colors. Try to stick with one palate: ruby, hunter green, deep mauve. These
work together because they are dark colors.
Purchase your bigger
pieces of furniture first. Then work on the smaller accessories. I suggest
wicker since it is a small budget (wicker tends to be fairly affordable).
You can also use oak which will really bring the Victorian feel to your
home. But, don't use both wicker and oak – it won't work.
You can also use old family photos to create an antique effect. Try to find
black and whites of your grandparents or other family members. You can also
get old color pictures re-touched and antiqued at any camera store (or at
home if you have a photoshop program). Use all photos in the same finished
frame (all copper, all silver, all brass) for continuity.
